Geography

PUTTING GEOGRAPHICAL KNOWLEDGE INTO PRACTICE

Our teachers teach engaging and interactive lessons which foster a love of learning. Our pupils are globally aware and challenge cultural stereotypes wherever they find them. Through geographical enquiry they seek and gain a detailed knowledge of places that shape our World. Our pupils have the opportunity to experience fieldwork and as a result learn from experiences outside of the classroom, acquiring essential geographical skills. Our pupils thrive in a safe environment where success is recognised and celebrated.

AMBITIOUS AND INSPIRING CURRICULUM PATH

Through an ambitious, exciting, knowledge-rich and carefully sequenced curriculum, the English team at Fortis Academy strive to unlock potential, to inspire a love of learning, to ignite a passion for the subject. We aim for excellence in all areas and continuously endeavour to advance our expertise. Students develop as independent, resilient and thoughtful learners, but more importantly as life-long learners that possess the self-belief and skills required to fulfil their potential.

SENIOR ACADEMY

At Key Stage 4 we follow the EDEXCEL Geography B specification. With a secure grounding in knowledge and skills from Key Stage 3 our pupils adapt well to the new challenges of GCSE Geography. The EDEXCEL course focuses on enquiry-based learning and the issues which affect the World both locally and globally. The course includes the development of a range of both Geographical and transferable skills which enables the pupils to progress to the next stage in their learning. We ensure that we meet the needs of all our pupils whilst continuously challenging them to exceed their expectations. Home learning and independent study is an important part of the learning journey at Key Stage 4. Pupils also have the opportunity to choose to study BTEC Travel and Tourism.

At Key Stage 5, Geography at A Level aims to build upon and further develop the knowledge and skills gained at GCSE. A Level Geography involves studying both human and physical aspects of the topic

FOUNDATION ACADEMY

At Key Stage 3 Geography’s curriculum is designed around a “Mastery” system. This ensures that the key concepts and skills are taught on multiple occasions across the three years in order to embed the skills and key concepts providing a solid base for progression to Key Stage 4 and 5. We incorporate opportunities for thinking hard to stretch the pupils and provide more detailed support when we need to. Work is assessed by a variety of methods and focuses on the steps to improve as well as praising and encouraging pupils. There is a clear link to careers introducing pupils to the vast career opportunities available to them through the study of Geography.
